Nutrition Options For Diabetes

The Following article has been contributed by:Elizabeth Carrollton writes for Drugwatch.com. and writes about defective medical devices and dangerous drugs . Thank You Elizabeth.

Nutrition Options for Diabetes

A person does not need to shed 50, 60 or more pounds to control glucose levels. The American Diabetes Association states that even losing a few pounds can help patients with type 2 diabetes.
In addition to choosing a nutritious solution for weight loss, a nutritionist will recommend a diet plan that aids in managing blood glucose levels. In some cases, the course of action is able to both lower sugar levels and promote healthy weight loss. Patients may even be able to lower their dependence on medication such as Actos. The popular diabetes drug has been linked to bladder cancer and heart failure. Several thousand Actos Lawsuits have been filed against the drug’s manufacturer.
The first nutrition option for a patient with type 1 or type 2 diabetes is a carb-counting diet. This particular solution can be used alone as a method to combat high sugar levels, or it can be used for an insulin regimen. When utilized solo, the patient selects foods that are low in carbs. Generally, this means that the person with hyperglycemia will choose whole grain foods and refrain from eating foods high in sugar, starch or other foods containing carbs.
If the carb counting coincides with insulin, so many units of the drug will be given based on the amount of carbs consumed. Typically, this is only used in patients with type 1 diabetes. Since carbohydrates are oftentimes a substantial portion of one’s diet, replacing the carbs with high-protein foods may be recommended; however, patients who have kidney problems in addition to or as a result of diabetes may not be able to increase protein.
Another nutrition option that works well for an individual who suffers from type 2 diabetes is using the glycemic index. Glycemic index diets use the scale as a reference for which foods have the greatest impact on blood sugar levels. The diet is a safe method for weight loss that has appeared to promote weight loss. It also has been used as an effective method for controlling blood glucose levels.
Eating healthy is a very popular recommendation for people who have diabetes. Well-balanced meals, along with fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains can assist with weight issues. Not to mention, eating healthy tends to cause one to remove foods that spike blood sugar levels for his or her diet.
Patients with type 2 diabetes will benefit from the fiber found within whole grains. This is because cardiovascular disease goes hand-in-hand with diabetes in many patients. Whole grains are known to assist with reducing cholesterol levels, states the American Heart Association. Cholesterol may increase as a result of diabetes, so these foods help to keep cholesterol levels down.
The key factor in this form of a diet is learning to eat in moderation. Although fruits like watermelon, cantaloupe and strawberries may taste delicious and be packed with vitamins and minerals, when a person with diabetes eats too much fruit, blood sugar levels may rise tremendously as result of the sugar fructose found within these foods.
Some patients may be prescribed a diabetes exchange list diet. These diets are especially geared toward controlling glucose levels rather than weight loss and ensure that the patient is eating a well-rounded diet of calories, carbs and other nutrients. The focal point of this nutrition choice is that all foods are categorized under a type, such as meat, milk or fat. The concept behind this option is that a person can exchange foods within a certain group, due to the fact that all of the foods within that group have the same effect on blood sugar. A person’s dietician will assist them in developing an exchange system ideal for his or her condition.

Protests Over Monsanto FDA Conflict of Interest Goes Viral

I apologize I’ve been on Hiatus for over a month. Our family was moving during the month of June and we are not quite completely settled in yet. So just to say hello world, and let you know I’m still here, I’m sharing this re-blog with you. Because it’s THATgood. Also because this young man is my son’s current age AND also since I’m partial to home schooled families since we are home schoolers our selves.     🙂

Earlier this week, the Washington Post featured a story on the rise in online protests over the appointment of former Monsanto executive Michael Taylor as President Obama’s senior adviser to the FDA.

The article points out that Michael Taylor currently holds the position of deputy commissioner for foods at the FDA. This position is responsible for overseeing food labels and ensuring they contain clear and accurate information, as well as the development of strategies for food safety and planning new food safety legislation. This is the first time anyone has held this position at the FDA.

Michael Taylor’s resume at Monsanto is highlighted by his policy development related to Monsanto’s genetically engineered bovine growth hormone (rbGH/rbST).

There is a new online movement calling for Obama to cut ties with someone so obviously vested in the success of Monsanto and the bioengineering industry. Click here to sign the online petition.

A couple of humorous sidebars on this story:

You have to check out this video where an 11 year old rips Monsanto and Big Food. There is nothing quite as simultaneously disarming and delightful as a child speaking truth to humble a multinational conglomerate.

I say a little prayer for you

I say a little prayer for you (Photo credit: alessandro silipo)

I think this is such a powerful prayer and Jordan Rubin is the reason why I started this blog, so I wanted to share his prayer with everyone…

My Prayer For You

Today I pray that like Job, God would surround you with a hedge of protection and that you would have greater blessings in the latter poart of your life from this day forward.

I pray that like Abraham, you would grow wealthy with cattle, gold, and silver.

That like Isaac, you’d plant a field and reap a hundred-fold harvest.

That like Jacob, with wisdom and discernment, you would grow your flocks and herds.

That like Joseph, the dream that God’s given you will be salvation to many.

That like Moses, the Lord will reveal himself to you and show you His glory.

That like Bazalel, who helped build the Tabernacle, that the Lord would anoint you for the specific task that He’s called you to accomplish.

That like Joshua, God will fill you with the spirit of wisdom.

That like the children of Israel, you’d live in land that you didn’t buy, with barns and houses that you didn’t build, drinking from springs and wells that you didn’t know existed and eating from vineyards that he didn’t plant.

That He’d bless the fruit of your trees, the grass of your fields and the calves of your herds. That He’d bring the spring and autumn rain, and that there would be none sick among you , and none barren.

That like David, God would give you a blueprint of  what He would like you to build for Him.

That like Solomon, He would give you a wise and understanding heart.

That like Uzziah, there would be good men caring for you r cattle in the foothill and that you’d have a love and understanding of the soil.

That like Danie, God would give you ten times the wisdom, favor, and discernment of all those that don’t know Him.

And that like Peter, you’d cast your net on the right side of the boat and catch one hundred and fifty-three fish in

Jesus’ name, AMEN!

What’s “white poison”?

de: Struktur von Lactose en: Structure of Lactose

de: Struktur von Lactose en: Structure of Lactose (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Have you ever heard milk be referred to as “white poison.”? It is a term known in natural circles when referring to cows milk. You may, hold this opinion your self, regarding it as well. I think we are all well versed with the term “lactose intolerant”. Lacstose is a carbohydrate in the form of a disaccharide. To you and me that means, it has two molecules of sugar that are linked together. It’s no surprise to many people across the nation and else where find it very difficult to digest, because,  of it’s dual sugar molecule. It must be broken down before being absorbed into the small intestine. Unlike a monosaccharide  it is a single sugar molecule that can be directly absorbed into the lining of the small intestine with out having to be broken down first. Other examples of disaccharide carbohydrate’s are, white and brown refined sugars, cookies, cupcakes, brownies, pies, boxed cereals, breads, bagels, dinner rolls, muffins, and cinnamon rolls.  Examples of monosaccharides are most fruits, vegetable, natural cheese, cultured dairy, nuts, and raw honey.

There are also “people groups” such as those with Jewish decent, African-American’s and people who’ve decended from the Middle East and India find it more difficult to break down the lactose or disaccharides. YET, in those areas, (countries and continents) their diets were based around dairy. So why such allergies here and not there? I’ll get back to that question in a moment. Also, here in the U.S, hormone-ridden, pesticide residue laced commercial milk attributes to sixty percent of ear infections in kids under six years of age. And Lactose intolerance is the most common food allergy in the U.S today.

If you havn’t heard before I’m going to tell you what the conventionally raised cows are being fed.  It includes GMO soy and corn  which can also include animal products, antibiotics, and other unnatural substances such as chewing gum, candy with the wrappers still on, chicken manure, and other cow’s blood. Obviously their health is put in jeopardy and they are unhealthy. They are also given a wide array of antibiotics, hormones and vaccines. All of the things that are given to the cow remain IN the cow from the meat to the milk that comes from it.

So getting back to the question I asked earlier in this post. It is believed that a small genetic mutation occurred up to two thousand years ago, that is found in modern dairy cows populating North America, Europe, and Australia. This very mutation may play a huge role in dairy intolerance. Milk proteins come in two types, whey and casein. Casein comprises about 80% of the total protein in milk, and of that protein there are A1 and A2 beta-casein. Cows pass down either A1, A2 or both to their offspring just like we pass down eye color to our children. Years ago the majority of cattle were A2, then the genetically mutated A1 strain appeared. The original A2 milk is generally produced in Africa, Asia and France, and also in goats milk. Upwards of 90% of cattle in the US are A1 cattle, but Beyond Organic’s dairy herd is 100% A2 beta-casein cattle.

So what does this mean? It means that the dairy products from Beyond Organic are “Highly Tolerable” so say’s many people with “lactose intolerance”. What makes their products even more desirable is although their products are pasteurized, they are Truly Raw keeping the most vital probiotic cultures (more than thirty) that create a wide array of beneficial compounds, including organic acids and enzymes. How do they pasteurize and not kill all of the beneficial probiotics? So glad you asked. In addition to their Olde World production methods, it is never heated above the cows body temperature of about 101 degrees Fahrenheit. You can find other products labeled “raw”, except, those cheese makers are legally allowed to heat the milk to just a single degree under pasteurization temperature, a process that kills the important probiotics and enzymes. So if you’re wanting to find the best organic products under the sun. Click here OR here.

The Dirty Dozen

The Dirty Dozen

budget

We are all on a budget these days and for a lot of us, let’s face it, it’s hard feeding your family a completely organic based diet. Especially if you are a single family income. (Like us) So,  I wanted to post a list for you of the top 12 non-organic, contaminated foods. The one’s you should ALWAYS buy ORGANIC and  NEVER compromise on!

Also, since I brought up the topic of budget and affordability, in my opinion if you are trying to “clean up” your eating NEVER compromise on the meat you buy either. If you can’t fit into your budget, the safest grass fed beef, then, I suggest you cut it out all together. I believe you should not compromise your health for cheap, dirty meat.

Please remember this, if nothing else…You WILL PAY for your choices in food, whether it’s out of your pocket, or in the form of you or your families health. Risking your health and well being, just isn’t worth the cost!

Recent Case of Mad Cow Disease in California!

THURSDAY, APRIL 26, 2012

Cattle into Cannibals. The Real Issue with the Recent Case of Mad Cow Disease

By now, you are probably aware that a case of Mad Cow Disease was confirmed yesterday. The cow in question was discovered in California, and already it has set off a chain reaction of government pundits and food experts rushing in to say there isn’t a problem.

Well, yes and no. There have only been four cases of Mad Cow Disease ever found in the United States. However, what gets glossed over is how a common practice in conventional cattle management can contribute to the spread of this nasty disease. It’s one of the ugly truths that Big Dairy doesn’t want you to know about. If you’re squeamish, you may not want to read what I’m about to tell you.

It is common practice in the dairy industry to turn cattle into cannibals. That’s right, to turn a natural plant-eating animal into a cannibal. “Waste” product from slaughtered cows is routinely turned into “feed” that goes back to the livestock herd. In what I find to be the most appalling example, the blood from these slaughtered animals is sometimes dried and added back to the “replacer” milk for calves. You heard that right, young calves often drink blood.  And, it’s perfectly legal to allow this to happen, and it’s been going on for decades!

The following is taken directly from the FDA’s website. For those that don’t know “BSE” stands for Bovine Spongiform Encephalopath and is the scientific name for Mad Cow Disease. Here is the direct quote from the FDA website:

How was BSE spread? It is thought that BSE was spread via meat-and-bone meal fed to cattle. The practice of using this material as a source of protein in cattle feed has been common for several decades. In the late 1970s there was a change in the production (rendering) process used to make this meat and bone meal. One hypothesis has been that this change permitted the infectious agent of scrapie (a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy, or TSE, of sheep) to survive the rendering process, and get transmitted to other animals, such as cows, that are fed meat-and-bone meal nutritional supplements. An inquiry by the British government has however, concluded that scrapie infected MBM was not the source of BSE nor was the change in the rendering practices responsible for survival of the BSE agent. Rather, this inquiry has stated that BSE may have originated spontaneously as a result of a genetic mutation and was amplified by the feeding of contaminated MBM to cattle

Please, please, please STOP supporting the producers who adhere to the practice of turning cattle into cannibals. Yes, the practice is unsafe, but more than that it’s inhumane

What’s Really In Your Food?

Here’s a copy of an article my husband found in a local news publication, I wanted to share it with you all. From Temecula Valley Healthy Times TM Publication

What’s Really in Your Food?

The Food industry’s most evil ingredients

By Mike Adams of NaturalNews.com

Ever wonder what’s really in the food sold at grocery stores around the world? People keep asking me, “What ingredients should I avoid?” So I put together a short list that covers all the most toxic and disease -promoting ingredients in the food supply. These are the substances causing cancer, diabetes, heart disease and leading to tens of billions of dollars in unnecessary health care costs across America (and around the world)

If you want to stay healthy and out of the hospital, read ingredients labels and make sure avoid all these ingredients:

Acrylamides– Toxic, cancer-causing chemicals formed in foods when carbohydrates are exposed to high heat (baking, frying, grilling). They’re present in everything from bread crusts to snack chips, and because they aren’t intentional ingredients, acrylamides do NOT have to be listed on labels.

Apartame-Chemical sweetener that causes neurological disorders, seizures, blurred vision and migraine headaches.

Autolyzed Proteins– Highly processed form of protein containing free glutamate and used to mimic the taste-enhancer chemical MSG.

BPA (Bisphenol-A) – A hormone mimicking chemical found in nearly all food packaging plastics. Active in just parts per billion, BPA promotes cancer, infertility and hormone disorders, It also “feminizes” males, promoting male breast growth and hormone disruption.

Casein-Milk proteins. Hilariously, this widely used in “soy cheese” products that claim to be alternatives to cow’s milk. Nearly all of them are made with cows milk proteins.

Corn Syrup-Just another name for High Fructose Corn Syrup, frequently used in infant formula products.

Food ColorsFD&C Red #40, for example, is linked to behavioral disorders in children. Nearly all artifical food colors are drived from petroleum, and many are contaminated with aluminum.

Genetically Modified Ingredients-Not currently listed on the label because the GMO industry (Monsanto and DuPont) absolutely does not want people to know which foods contain GMOs. Nearly all conventionally grown corn, soy and cotton are GMOs. They’re linked to severe infertility problems and may even cause the bacteria in your body to produce and release a pesticide in your own gut. If your’e not eating organic corn, you’re definitely eating GMO corn.

High Fructose Corn Syrup-A highly processed liquid sugar extracted with the chemical solvent glutaraldehyde and frequently contaminated with mercury. It’s also linked to diabetes, obesity and mood disorders. Used in thousands of grocery items, including things you wouldn’t suspect like pizza sauce and salad dressing.

  • Homogenized Milk
  • Hydrochloride
  • Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein
  • Partially Hydrogenated Oils
  • Propylene Glycol
  • Phosphoric Acid
  • Sodium
  • Sodium Nitrite
  • Soy Protein
  • Sucralose (Splenda)
  • Sugar
  • Textured Vegetable Protein (usually made from GMO soy beans)
  • Yeast Extract (hidden form of MSG)

What is GMO?

Stop! Genetically modified organism(s) - GMO.

Stop! Genetically modified organism(s) - GMO. (Photo credit: in search for a new country of residence)

What is GMO ? So glad you asked, let me regale you. GMO is an acronym for Genetically Modified Organism. They have been created through the gene-splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). This relatively new science allows DNA from one species to be injected into another species in a laboratory, creating combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.”GMO food may make you sick. Studies link GMOs with toxins, allergies, infertility, infant mortality, immune dysfunction, stunted growth, accelerated aging, and death.”

In 30 other countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production of GMOs, because they are not considered proven safe. According to the USDA in 2009, 93% of soy, 93% of cotton, and 86% of corn grown in the U.S. were GMO.

There is absolutely no consumer benefit’s to GMO’s. A 2008 CBS News Poll found that 87% of consumers wanted GMOs labeled). And, according to a recent CBS/New York Times poll, 53% of consumers said they would not buy food that has been genetically modified. Here’s some good news though,  it’ll only take 5% of the U.S population to change what type/brands of foods they buy in order for the largest food conglomerates to switch back to non GMO, due to a reduction in their market share. Basically it comes down to simple mathematics. GMO means agribusiness, agribusiness is Kraft, Heinz,Kellog’s, Quaker, Nestle, etc. etc. the list goes on and on. These companies purchase the commodity crops because they’re grown faster and cheaper. For us the consumer that translates to less safe and empty food nutritionally. All these things play a factor in these companies “bottom line.” It’s up to us as consumers to determine which way the food industry swings. We all vote with every dollar that is spent on the “national brands.”

I will elaborate more on how GMO’s are far less nutritionally dense in a follow up post. Thank you for stopping by. If you like this article please spread the word. Thank you! God Bless!

The reason behind GMO’s is agribusiness.
